My Romantic Audio Drama picks for Valentine’s Day or any day!

Despite being aro as fuck…I love…well love. I find romance to be a fun, interesting, and, unfortunately, untapped genre explored in the podcast medium. Seeing how the “day of love” is approaching, I thought I would recommend some audio dramas that fit the holiday.

The audio dramas listed below are romance-centric or have a romance subplot within them.

THE PENUMBRA PODCAST

Genre: Science Fiction & High Fantasy

Type of Relationships: Multiple queer relationships

CW: Multiple warnings throughout the series, which are listed in the show notes

Ok, let’s get the cool kids out of the way. If you’re a fan of audio drama, you’ve most likely have heard about this podcast, and for good reason.

The Penumbra Podcast is brilliantly written and filled with a lot of interesting and complex characters.

ROOMMATES

Genre: Romcom

Type of Relationships: MLM

CW: none

Roommates is a pandemic-era micro pod about two college roommates stuck together during the lockdown.

If you like the friends to enemies trope, then this is the podcast for you. Like someone brought an Ao3 fic to life.

LIFE WITH LEO(H)

Genre: Romcom

Type of Relationships: Straight, Side WLW couple

CW: none

Life with Leo(h) takes place a couple of years in the future. It centers on a repressed lawyer and a robot who is in love with her.

Enjoyed this one very much. A lot of fun and cute, witty humor and I love the Beyonce Theme Park…listen to the podcast, it will make sense.

KALEIDOTROPE

Genre: Romcom

Type of Relationships: Multiple queer relationships throughout the series

CW: none

Kaleidotrope is about two radio hosts, reporting from a magical college campus where romantic tropes occur.

This is a very quirky and light-hearted podcast. Definitely one meant for fans of fanfiction.

STEAL THE STARS

Genre: Noir, Scifi, Thriller

Type of Relationships: Straight

CW: Adult themes and situations

Alright, so this is probably the most controversial one on my list.  Steal The Stars is about two government employees guarding a big secret. The two fall in love with each other (which is forbidden by the organization) and they decide to steal the secret in order to live a better life.

So yeah, like I said this one is a bit controversial and not for its ending, which had fans either confused or angry.

While I enjoyed the steaminess of their relationship, it is hard for me to say whether I view the main character as being “in love with each other”. Regardless, I still think this podcast is worth a listen just on the world-building alone.

PASITHEA POWDER

Genre: Thriller, Space Opera, War, Romance

Type of Relationships: WLW, side queer couples

CW: Adult themes and situations

Pasithea Powder is about Jane and Sophie, a scientist and a soldier, estranged friends who are forced together by the strange things they discover after the war.

I do not know where to begin with this one. I went in expecting an enemies-to-lovers romance that deals with healing from war, but boy oh boy did this story turn out to be so much more than that.

If you’re looking for a scifi romance filled with twists and turns, listen to this right now!

LOOK UP

Genre: Coming to Age, Romance

Type of Relationships: MLM

CW: none

Look Up is about two young men who meet on a beach every night with a telescope and the unanswered questions from years of a friendship lost as they await their parent’s return from a mission to Mars.

This is a very sweet, yet not so wholesome, story about two boys trying to heal and discover themselves.

POUNDED IN THE BUTT BY MY OWN PODCAST

Genre: Romcom

Type of Relationships: MLM

CW: Sexual explicit

Pounded in The Butt By My Own Podcast is a “crossover” between celebrated author Chuck Tingle and podcast network Night Vale Present.

I admit the “joke” for this podcast wears off after ep 3, but what I like about Chuck’s writing is that you can tell he cares about his audience and wants them to have a good time both in fantasy and reality

So there are my picks for valentine’s day. If you have any podcasts, you think should be added, comment below.

Oh, and of course, if this list isn’t enough for you, you can always check out my array of podcasts.
